Collagen declines from the mid-twenties, but not to zero

Collagen production declines by roughly 1 % a year from the mid-twenties. It is a biological reality, but not a catastrophe. Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen production, stay active for life. They respond to signals: to peptides from supplementation, to movement, to nutrition and to sleep. The question is what signals you send them.

Sleep: the cheapest collagen intervention

The body produces collagen mainly at night, during deep sleep stage N3. That is when growth hormone is released, stimulating collagen synthesis and cell renewal. Harvard cites a recommendation of 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep as one of the basic factors protecting the collagen reserve.

In practice this means that meditation, regular movement, enough sleep and reducing chronic stressors are also collagen strategies.

What actively destroys collagen

Sugar and glycation: excess sugar binds sugar molecules to collagen fibres, making them stiff and brittle. This damage is partly irreversible.
