Collagen vs. collagen cream: What actually works?

By: Záviš Lacina, Founder of collalloc · Reviewed by: MUDr. Dagmar Lacinová

A cream with collagen and collagen in a sachet are not two versions of the same product. They work differently, in a different place and with a different effect.

Why a collagen cream cannot do what supplementation does

The collagen molecule is too large to pass through the skin barrier. The stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, allows molecules of up to roughly 500 Daltons to pass. Native collagen has a molecular weight of over 300,000 Daltons. Simply put: it does not get there.

Collagen creams can hydrate the surface of the skin, temporarily fill fine lines and improve the softness of the texture. They do this excellently. But they do not repair dermal collagen, because they physically cannot reach it.

„A collagen cream is like repainting the facade of a house. Supplementation is like repairing the load-bearing walls.“

What works better and for what

  • Immediate effect, surface hydration: topical products. The result is visible that same day.
  • Long-term elasticity, dermis density, wrinkle reduction: oral collagen. The result comes after 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Joints, gut, hair, nails: oral collagen. A cream does not reach there.
  • Topical care combined with supplementation: combining the two makes sense and research suggests an additive effect. But a cream alone is not enough.

The exception: hydrolyzed collagen in creams

Some topical products contain hydrolyzed collagen with a low molecular weight. It can partially penetrate the stratum corneum and act as a signal peptide for fibroblasts. The effect is still local and superficial, but scientifically more plausible than native collagen in a cream.

Peptides such as Matrixyl or Argireline work on a similar principle. They are scientifically backed, but again: only locally. None of this will affect the collagen in your joints or gut.

How to read it on the label

  • The cream contains „collagen“ with no further specification: most likely native collagen, which will not penetrate into the dermis.
  • The cream contains „hydrolyzed collagen“ or „collagen peptides“: better, but still a local effect.
  • Oral supplementation: look for hydrolyzed marine collagen, molecular weight below 500 Da, daily dose of 2.5 to 10 g.
