Collagen side effects: What you should know
Collagen has a good safety profile. But there are exceptions and situations where caution is warranted. Here they are.
What the safety classification says
Hydrolyzed collagen is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as „GRAS“, Generally Recognized As Safe. Clinical studies lasting 4 to 24 weeks repeatedly show a minimal incidence of adverse effects at doses of 2.5 to 15 g per day.
A 2024 meta-analysis including 870 participants confirmed that oral collagen peptides improve joint pain and function scores, with a safety profile comparable to placebo.
The most common side effects
- Digestive discomfort. A small portion of users report nausea or a feeling of fullness at the start. It usually subsides after the first week. If it persists, try cutting the dose in half and gradually increasing it.
- Taste or smell. Marine collagen can have a fishy taste or odor if it is not well processed. collalloc filters every batch, which minimizes this effect.
- Allergic reaction. Marine collagen comes from fish. If you are allergic to fish or seafood, collagen supplementation from this source is not suitable for you.
Who should be cautious
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Collagen itself has not been clinically tested on pregnant women. Consult your doctor before starting supplementation.
- Kidney disease. Collagen is a protein, and excessive protein intake can burden the kidneys in people with kidney disease. If you have renal problems, discuss the dose with your doctor.
- Blood thinner users. Some collagen products combine collagen with vitamin K or omega-3. If you take warfarin or similar medications, check the supplement's composition.
What most often causes side effects
Pure hydrolyzed collagen on its own is safe. Problems are usually caused by added ingredients, sweeteners, colorings, binders or synthetic flavors. That is why a product's composition matters more than the form of the collagen itself.
collalloc sachets contain only hydrolyzed marine collagen. No sweeteners, no colorings, no binders. Every batch is laboratory tested for heavy metals, microorganisms and contaminants.
„It is not that collagen is harmful. It is that cheap products with a long list of ingredients harm you, and the collagen just hangs there like a marketing label.“
