Chaga, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps: which mushroom for calm, mood and energy?
Not all functional mushrooms act the same. If you are after calm, a better mood or more energy, it matters which one you reach for.
Chaga: the mushroom for calm and antioxidant support
Among functional mushrooms, Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is the record holder for antioxidant content. It contains melanin, the enzyme SOD (superoxide dismutase) and polyphenols, which neutralize free radicals. That is exactly why collalloc counts it among the “quiet” mushrooms.
Its role is not acute sedation like a sleeping pill. Chaga acts over the long term: it reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, which accompany chronic overload and worsen recovery. In traditional use, Chaga is the mushroom for balance and grounding, not for a fast, one-off effect.
What to expect from Chaga: gradual calming and a better sense of recovery, not an instant “switch-off.” Its antioxidant effect is its best-documented property.
Lion’s Mane: mood through BDNF and the gut-brain axis
Lion’s Mane influences mood through a different mechanism than Chaga. It stimulates BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a protein that supports neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Research suggests that Lion’s Mane also modulates the gut microbiome, thereby influencing the gut-brain axis, the direct line of communication between the gut and the brain via the vagus nerve.
A 2024 pilot study (RCT, 2024 survey of 1,374 users) showed that more than half of users noted an improvement in mood and a reduction in anxiety after 2 to 8 weeks.
Cordyceps: energy, not relaxation
An important clarification: Cordyceps primarily increases energy output and physical performance, not relaxation. If you are after calm, Cordyceps is not the right choice as an evening supplement, it is a morning mushroom.
Inside collalloc MIND you will find Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga and Maitake. Cordyceps supplies energy and focus, Lion’s Mane cognitive clarity, Chaga calm and antioxidant support, Maitake the immune component.
“If you need to calm down and recover, reach for Chaga. If you are troubled by brain fog and mood swings, try Lion’s Mane. They are different tools, not synonyms.”
